What is CBD

What is CBD, and why is it so popular right now?

Posted on September 30, 2020September 30, 2020 by Rose Boysen

Whether you’re a cannabis enthusiast or skeptic, you’ve likely noticed the current craze over all things Cannabidiol. Despite its shaky legal status and regulation standards, CBD products like oils, lotions, and gummies have become some of the most in-demand wellness products on the market. read more about Cannabidiol at https://bespokeextracts.com/knowledgebase/

So why exactly is CBD so hot right now? What is CBD oil? And more importantly — what is CBD?

Farm Bill 2018

A recent bill signed by President Trump is playing a big part in why CBD products have become more widely available in the U.S. in the past year.

The Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 (or 2018 Farm Bill) legalized the farming and selling of industrial hemp and its derived products in all 50 states.

Compared to fellow cannabis plant marijuana, hemp cannot get you high. This is because it is legally defined as containing less than 0.3 percent of the psychoactive cannabinoid THC (tetrahydrocannabinol).

The Farm Bill of 2018 means that CBD products are considered legal only if they are derived from industrial hemp grown per the bill’s tight regulations.

FDA Allows CBD for Epilepsy

Part of CBD’s rise in popularity has been due to anecdotal health claims on its positive effect on various ailments.

The FDA, however, has warned many manufactures on the dangers of advertising their products with broad health claims framing CBD as a “cure-all” for everything from anxiety to arthritis and even cancer.

So far, research has shown that the most persuasive evidence of CBD’s medical benefits lies in treating epilepsy.

The FDA approved CBD through Epidiolex, a drug meant to treat Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome, two rare forms of epilepsy. This is, however, the first and so far only FDA approved CBD product in the U.S.

So Are They Completely Legal?

By now, there is one question on everyone’s minds: is CBD oil legal?

And the answer is tricky. It depends on where the CBD is derived, meaning whether it is hemp- or cannabis-derived, the state you’re living in, and the legal status of CBD in that state.

States like California and Massachusetts are more CBD-friendly than, say, Idaho and South Dakota, where CBD is criminalized.read more about CBD by clicking here

Though CBD products are widely available online and in-store in many states, the previously-mentioned Farm Bill 2018 makes CBD legal only if it comes from industrial hemp containing less than 0.3 percent of THC.

What Do the Numbers Say? (Statistics)

The alternative care industry is on the rise, and CBD market growth is projected to expand in the future thanks primarily to products like lotions and gummies, which are highly in demand further.

Sales for CBD products have increased sevenfold within the past year, and the legal CBD market is projected to generate more than $23 billion by the year 2023.

CBD statistics show that most sales are projected to come from retail chains, with $16 billion (54 percent) worth of revenue.

Takeaway

With the recent rise in popularity of all things hemp-related and CBD oil usage growing exponentially, it’s easy to see why these products are slowly working their way to becoming everyday staples that you can easily find at your favorite stores.

There is no doubt that we will see more CBD in the future as new studies and regulations make way for new laws on hemp- and marijuana-derived products.
